Cold Process Soap Making

A traditional Soap Making Method

Heating
An oil mixture and lye solution are combined at a specific temperature.

Saponification
When combining the alkaline (lye) and acid (oil mixture), a chemical reaction occurs. By constant stirring, the solution is neutralized ('saponified'), resulting in a thick, creamy mixture.

Curing
The thickened liquid is poured into prepared moulds and left to cure for 4 - 10 weeks after which the lye is no longer in evidence.

The Cold Process of Soap Making ensures that the glycerine, a valuable product of the soap making process, remains in the finished soap.
